FERPA
Because the free tools run in your browser and store no student records, there's no education-record data for Strategic Student to access or retain. Here's what that means for your district.
How the free tools align with FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protects the privacy of student education records. Strategic Student's free tools are built so they never touch those records. The tools run entirely in your browser, they don't transmit anything to us, and they don't store student data anywhere. There's simply no education-record data for us to receive, hold, or disclose.
No data-sharing agreement needed for the free tools
Because we never become a recipient of student education records through the free tools, a district can put them in front of teachers, counselors, and leaders without a data-sharing agreement. There's nothing flowing to a third party, so there's nothing to govern with one. Educators use the tools the same way they'd use a calculator: the inputs and outputs stay on their own screen.
The products are handled separately
Strategic Sidekick and Strategic District are different. Those products work with real student data, by design, which is exactly what makes them useful to a school or system. When a district adopts a product, that relationship is handled under a separate Data Processing Agreement that spells out roles, responsibilities, and FERPA obligations in full. See our data processing overview for the summary, and request the full DPA when you're ready to review.
